We have been investigating wheels and axles this week by looking at toy vehicles and then making our own different shaped wheels.
We spent a day at forest school where we boiled water over the fire and watched the steam turn a windmill, a little bit like the engine of the SS Great Britain uses coal to turn the propeller. We also did mud painting of Brunel’s inventions. We measured natural items using rulers. We also had a go at whittling sticks with a potato peeler.
We also made bread after discussion about windmills making flour. We shook creamy milk to make butter and talked about the fat clinging together to make the butter.
As part of our Brunel topic, the children in Maple Class and Beech Class were asked to bring in items from the past to make a class museum. We had a whole host of interesting artefacts including old coins, a gong, a 100 year old bracelet and some records to name but a few! We invited parents and grandparents in to visit our museum with the children acting as guides, showing our visitors around and explaining what all the items were.
